What is the Black Star?
FOFA gallery
(2023)

"What is the Black Star?" explores Black cultural identity through a fusion of art, literature, archives, and personal work, presented both as a mailable catalogue and an installation. The project seeks to spark conversations on the politics of Blackness, centering the experiences of young Black artists engaged in spiritual and revolutionary thought, as well as radicalization.

As an ode to those who came before her and those she admires, Kingsley reflects on how one can contribute to the discourse on liberation—both physical and intellectual. As the work took shape, she recognized it as a self-portrait, not only of herself but of Black youth and future generations. More than just an artistic statement, this project stands as both a testament to Black Power in art and a tribute to revolutionary Black culture.

Included in the group show Manifesting Gardens, on display at the FOFA gallery.

Goodbye, This is...
Studio Giovanelli
August 29, 2024

Goodbye, This is…  by Lola Kingsley encapsulates a visual diary documenting the artist’s reflections from recent years, exploring the romanticized concept of “coming of age” and the fleeting nature of youth. This body of work offers a contemporary sociological perspective on how street culture, cityscapes, and the post-adolescent generation exist in
direct cohesion with one another. Through its ephemeral and intimate depiction of the self, the installation delves into themes of nostalgia and community. The work reveals the essence of a transformative period marked by constan change and uncertainty - symbolizing one’s farewell of innocence and the onset of early adulthood. Whether it is through personal interactions with these city characters or by focusing on cities as subjects, Kingsley engages with the subcultures that emerge from the interplay between the impermanence of youth and urban environments. The installation is both a tribute to her peers and an invitation for viewers to reflect on how the city influences youth and how youth shapes culture.
